While classified as a eight-bit computer, the MSX has a 10-bit processor. SONY was not the only manufacture to build an MSX computer as it was an open standard developed by Nishi. Many other companies in Japan and Korea made computers based on the same standard, but the MSX 2 is the most basic of that design.
While still powered by the Z80A, the MSX 2 increased video ram to 128KB, added a 80 x 24 text mode, offered two resolutions: 512 x 212 x 16 and 256 x 212 x 256. It also features interlacing to double vertical resolutions and has a separate sound chip.
The HB F500 was intended for the professional market and included a floppy drive.
